Billie Josephine (Jo) Blankenship Obituary
Billie Josephine (Jo) Blankenship, 80, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, passed away December 12, 2017, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held 10am Saturday, December 30, 2017, at Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, NM, with Pastor Billy Tucker officiating. Burial will be in the La Luz cemetery.

Jo was born June 22, 1937 in Hope, NM, to John Allen Blakeney, Jr. and Rose Marie (Briscoe) Blakeney. Her father worked on various ranches in the Sacramento mountains and southeastern New Mexico. After his death in a ranch accident in 1954, her mother moved the family to Artesia.

She married Robert G. (Bob) Blankenship December 22, 1956 in Artesia, NM, and they made their home in La Luz, and then Laborcita canyon. Over the many years spent in Otero County, Jo fulfilled the roles of wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister, home maker, school bus driver, 4H Team leader, and farm and ranch manger. In each of these roles Jo's artistic abilities were paramount. Over the years she made all of her daughter's clothes until Debbie revolted around 6th grade, embroidered numerous items, crocheted afghans, created numerous quilts, scrapbooks, and other crafts. With her children grown, Jo designed and crafted her daughter, Debbie's wedding dress and also her granddaughter, Robin's. Almost every member of the family received something that Jo had made with love. During Jo's days as a bus driver, it was a routine event for Mrs. B to draw animals for the children as they waited for the buses to Alamogordo to return with the older children. After her kids were grown, Jo attended several workshops that addressed her desire to paint. Painting was a new love of her life and she explored using oils and pastels on a wide range on mediums including canvas, glass, and wood. In addition to her artistic abilities Jo is remembered by friends and family members as a loving and trusting person whom will be deeply missed.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, brothers Allen Lee Blakeney and James Curtis Blakeney, stepdaughter Glenda Mulroy, and granddaughter Karrie Blankenship.

Jo is survived by a sister, June Hamrick, of Hobbs, NM, son, Robert G. Blankenship, Jr. (Patty) of Bartlesville OK, daughter Debra Sitze (Steve) of Elizabeth, CO, stepson Harris Blankenship (Judy) of Alamogordo, NM, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and members of her church family at Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, NM.

Her family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Cornerstone Hospice in Bartlesville, OK, for their support during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home in Portales, NM, or the .
