Billy R. "Bill" Hamm Obituary
Billy R. "Bill" Hamm , 89, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Las Cruces , NM. He was born on Sunday, November 13, 1921 in Red Oak, Texas to William Jones and Ella J. (Coleman) Hamm.
Bill graduated high school in Red Oak, Texas, where he excelled at football and track. He was a proud veteran of World War II having bravely served in the 12th and 15th Army Air Corps, HQ Squadron First Fighter Group from August, 1942 to November, 1945 in North Africa and Italy. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and earned the EAME Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars while engaged in the Battles of Naples, Foggia, Rome and Arno.
After the war, he went to work for Cameron Lumber Company, of Sundown and McCamy, Texas from 1941 to 1958, until he moved to Alamogordo and married his loving wife of 47 years, Ruthena. Bill finished his career with Sears, Roebuck & Co. retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Alamogordo, Sertoma, American Legion and VFW Post 7686. Bill enjoyed watching football and boxing and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, especially with his son Billy. Bill was also a highly skilled handyman, but he will be most remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Ruthena M. Hamm of the family home; son Billy "Billy Bob" Hamm and wife Susan of Las Cruces; daughter Dixie Hawk and her husband Hazard of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and his pride and joy, granddaughter Taylor Lindsay Hamm of Las Cruces; as well as his brother John Hamm and wife Mary of Morgan, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Hamm and Coleman Hamm and a sister, Mary Lee McKee.
Funeral services for Billy R. "Bill" Hamm will be 10 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Bethel Baptist Church, 1316 Scenic Drive, Alamogordo with Reverend Bart Montgomery officiating.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First St., Alamogordo, NM
