Calvin Edward Speck

1924 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Calvin Edward Speck passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at his home.
Born Jan. 3, 1924, in Winnemucca, Nev., to Calvin Ernest Speck and Eva Jewel Brown, Calvin had been a longtime resident of Alamogordo. He was reared in Artesia, where his father owned a grocery store. He learned to work hard as a child during the Great Depression and never lost that work ethic. It served him well as an adult.
Calvin, or Eddie as most people knew him, was a member of the Artesia High School football team and was proud to be a Bulldog. After high school graduation, he proudly served as a mechanic with the 315th Bomb Wing in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army Air Corps, he enrolled in technical school in California, graduating first in his class. He went on to a long and distinguished career as an automobile mechanic, first in Artesia and later as owner of Speck's Automotive. There may have never been an automobile issue he couldn't diagnose and repair. He owned his business for some 40 years, retiring in 1996.
Eddie married Marguerite Alice Nelson (Peggy) and reared three children in Alamogordo: Craig, Kaaren and Becky. Those children gave him 11 grandchildren. Those children and their children all have fond memories of Grandpa Speck, a character in most senses of that word. They enjoyed the time spent with him and Granny and will always treasure those experiences. Peggy preceded him in death in 1995. One of his grandsons, Nelson Givens, left us in 2008. He has certainly been there to welcome his Grandpa with open arms. Also left to mourn his passing are treasured friends, including Jim and Elaine Reed, of Tularosa.
At his request, no funeral services will be held. A private service will take place at Fort Bliss, where he will be buried with his beloved Peggy.
The Speck family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements.
