Charles D. Evans Obituary
Charles Douglas Evans was born Feb. 22, 1931, at Ten Mile Bridge, Texas. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011.
As a young man, Charles joined the U.S. Navy and served on USS Philippine Sea air carrier CV-47 during the Korean War, where his love of the sea began.
Charles met and married the love of his life, Mary, and they had three daughters.
Charles was first and foremost a wonderful husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Family was everything to him.
In his younger years, Charles loved golf and was ever so proud of his hole in one. He was an accomplished archer and won numerous state competitions. He loved his ocean vessel and fishing off the California coast. Charles loved hunting, camping and landscaping. He was a member of the NRA, Elks BPOE, Moose Club and VFW.
After retiring from the California Department of Agriculture, he and Mary traveled extensively and joyfully in their RV.
After settling in Alamogordo, they became members of the Elks RV Traveling Club and joined their dear friends on many adventures.
They also became members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, completing their life's circle of love, family, friends and church in the Alamogordo community.
Charles will be sorely missed by all.
Charles is survived by his wife Mary; daughters Linda and Murphy Hayhurst, Rita L. and Warren Brown, and Patricia and Mark Bergemann; six grandchildren: Rachel, Shawnda, Heli, Sarahbeth, Matthew and Jacquelyn; five great-grandchildren: Cameron, Gwyneth, Gaius, Marudan and Jewel; brother Richard and Rita Evans; sister-in-law Clairita Evans; and many loved nieces and nephews, their family members and many dear friends.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; one sister; and beloved granddaughter MistyAnn Brown.
Services will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1212 Washington Ave., Alamogordo, with reception following in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Alamogordo Home Care/Hospice or Our Savior Lutheran Church.
