Charles R. Wride Obituary

Charles R. Wride, 72, passed away peacefully in his home on Feb. 15, 2015, surrounded by family.

Charlie was born on Jan. 5, 1943, in Denver, Colo., to Charles E. and Anna Mae Whiteman. After the death of his father in World War II, his mother re-married Elson K. Wride who adopted Charlie and loved and raised him as his own.

After graduating from Hobbs High School in 1961, Charlie joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a hospital corpsman. During his time in the service, he participated in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis blockade of ships.
Following his military service, he entered Eastern New Mexico University where he completed a bachelor of education and master of education degrees. While at Eastern, he met and married his wife, Susan Dodd Wride. From this union came two children, Rusty Wride and Sara Wride Batchelor.
The family moved to Alamogordo in 1969. Charlie worked for the Alamogordo Public Schools for 26 years serving as a social studies teacher and track and football coach at Chaparral Junior High School.
After further education and training, he ended his career as principal at Chaparral Junior High. Following his retirement from the Alamogordo Public Schools in 1995, he worked at Montwood High School in El Paso, Texas, as an economics teacher. He retired again in 2004.
However, Charlie could not stay away from his love of coaching and teaching. He served many years as a varsity track coach and worked as a substitute teacher for the Alamogordo Public Schools until 2014.

He loved being with his family, walking his dog, doing yard work and woodworking, but most of all he loved making his one of a kind beautiful handcrafted writing pens.

Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Whiteman and mother, Anna Mae Wride.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Susan E. Wride, son Rusty Wride of Alamogordo and daughter Sara Batchelor and her husband Mike who currently reside at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Bobby Wride of Comanche, Texas, Savanah Wride of Las Cruces, Amber Batchelor of Fayetteville, N. C., Kaitlyn Batchelor of Albany, Ore. and Trey Batchelor also of Edwards AFB as well as two great-granddaughters Alexis and Annabelle of North Carolina.
Charlie came from a large family. He is survived by his father Elson K. Wride of Loveland Colo., sisters Kathryn Shideler also of Loveland, Libby Wride of Washington, D.C. and Ellen Wride of Masonville, Colo., and brothers Don and Bill Wride both of Loveland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church in Alamogordo or Alamogordo Home Health Care and Hospice.

Charlie's family has entrusted his care to the Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services which will be held at Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at 10 a.m.
Interment will take place at Monte Vista Cemetery immediately following the service.
