Obituary Condolences

Charlie N. Cookson Sr., 88, was a resident of Alamogordo for the past 58 years. He passed away Jan. 15, 2008, at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Center in Alamogordo.
He was born Feb. 20, 1919, in Roswell. His father was a farmer in Roswell. He grew up in Roswell. He served in the Army during World War II. While in the Army, he crossed the Pacific Ocean 11 times. He graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor's of science degree in vocational agriculture. After college, he taught vocational agriculture in Tularosa.
He founded Cookson Better Built Homes in the early 1950s. He has built over 300 homes in Alamogordo and over 50 homes in Roswell. He also built numerous apartments and founded Cookson Apartments. He was a self-made businessman.
He was an active member in the Alamogordo White Sands Rotary Club. He had 32 years perfect attendance in the Rotary Club. He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the Alamogordo/White Sands Rotary Club. One year, he had perfect attendance in the Alamogordo Rotary Club and the White Sands Rotary Club.
He was an active horseman. He taught all six of his children how to ride horses. He rode horses until his health prevented him from doing so. He placed his sons on various construction sites, giving them a chance to learn the various construction trades associated with the home building industry. He was a good father.
Survivors include one sister, Marion Bradford, of Lufkin, Texas; two sons, Charlie "Poncho" Cookson Jr. and his wife Nancy, of Alamogordo, and Albert Cookson and his wife Carolyn, of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Ruth Ann Jones and her husband Dave, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Janice Urps and her husband Tommy, of Helotes, Texas, and Helen Warfield and her husband Ron, of Houston; eight grandchildren: Bryon Cookson and his wife Sonya, of Austin, Texas; Cherie Cookson, of Austin, Texas; Gary Jones and his wife Heather, of League City, Texas; Lisa Irwin and her husband Drew, of Castle Rock, Colo.; Stacey Urps, of San Antonio, Texas; Carey Beckham and her husband Gary, of Austin, Texas; Michelle Orellana, of Houston, and Philip Zamora, of Austin, Texas; eight great-grandchildren: Danial Andrew Irwin, Riley Kate Irwin, Jack David Jones, Camille Hope Jones, Mallory Gayle Beckham, Sean Bryon Cookson, Blake William Cookson and Olivia Hope Orellana.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hope Mary Cookson; one son, Rodman David Cookson; his parents, Henry Harry Cookson and Jewel Mable Cookson; two brothers, Rodman Cookson and Orval Cookson; and one sister, Dorthey Gambel.
The pallbearers are Drew Irwin, Gary Jones, Bryon Cookson, Jesse Bradford, Al Ward and James Rogers. The honorary pallbearers are the Alamogordo Rotary Club and the White Sands Rotary Club.
Funeral services will be conducted 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at The Alamogordo Funeral Home, with Father Frank Wilson officiating.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery in Alamogordo.
