World War II veteran          
Clarence Lionel Gendron, 89, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Mr. Gendron was born Dec. 14, 1918, in Wilkinsonville, Mass. He was the youngest of 11 children. 
He joined the National Guard in Worcester, Mass., Nov. 10, 1939, and was assigned to the 26th Yankee Division, 181st Infantry Regiment, Service Company, and was later reassigned to B Company (Emmett Guard).
On Jan. 16, 1941, the National Guard troops were federalized and sent to Camp Edwards. He participated in the Carolina maneuvers, then returned to Camp Edwards Dec. 6, 1941, preparing for release from active duty. Pearl Harbor changed that, and he was assigned to guard the coast at Wesley, R.I., until January 1943, when the 181st Infantry Regiment was relieved from the 26th Yankee Division and assigned to Fort Dix, N.J., for disbursement and Inactivation.
Mr. Gendron was transferred to Indiantown Gap, Pa., where he was assigned to the Fifth Armored Division, 15th Armored Infantry Battalion, Company B. He deployed from New York to England Feb. 11, 1944, arriving Feb. 23. He landed at Utah Beach July 1944 and spent the next 14 months in the hell of war. 
On Sept. 30, 1945, he departed France and arrived at Boston Harbor October 7. His debriefing was completed at Camp Miles Standish, and then he transferred to Camp Edwards for discharge Oct. 13, 1945.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary T. Gendron, in 1996.
He is survived by his son, Clarence V. Gendron and wife Carol J.; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Sue McCullough and husband Eric.
A graveside services will be conducted at the VA National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at 1 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2008.
