Devoted and loving mother, sister, aunt and grandmother
Cora Lester Coleman Roberts, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in Alamogordo. She was born April 16, 2008, in Chireno, Texas, to Stephen and Winnie (Randle) Coleman. As a young girl, Cora lived between Nacogdoches and San Augustine, Texas, where she met Lenard Roberts. They married Oct. 22, 1940. Their first child was James Lenard Roberts. Cora and Lenard relocated to Carlsbad, where she gave birth to Charles Vernon and Jimmy Lynn. They then moved to Los Angeles, and Cora gave birth to Bridgette Roberts, their only daughter. Upon retirement, they relocated to Alamogordo to be near Lenard’s brother Granville, his wife, Velma, and sisters Lucy, Kelly and Oletha Starks. Cora and Lenard were married 63 years; he preceded her in death in February 2003.  Cora began a clothing business in Los Angeles that was a huge success before moving to Alamogordo. Cora’s hobbies were talking on the telephone and worrying about her children. She was truly a devoted mother. Survivors include three sons, James Roberts and wife Cynthia, of Stockton, Calif., Charles Roberts, of Englewood, Calif., and Jimmy Roberts, of Alamogordo; one daughter, Bridgette Kennedy and husband Duwayne, of Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Brett Vallier, David Jones and his wife Sunshine, all of Alamogordo, Trim Jones, Romelo Jones, Nicole Kennedy and Nicole Roberts-Jones, all of California; six great-grandchildren, Jevon Hubbard, of Texas, Devante, Shania, Shanice, Shyanne and Sasha Jones, all of Alamogordo; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special sister, Celestine Strauss, of Pomona, Calif., who gave all a good sister could to Cora’s health and well-being.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lenard; sisters Shepherd Coleman, Lurine Washington and Charlene Nash; and her brothers Arthur Lee Coleman and Clinton Ray “Pie Joe” Coleman. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Elijah Dukes officiating.  Family members greeted friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
