Dan Darnold Obituary

Family and friends are mourning the passing of beloved father, brother, companion and patriot Dan Douglas Darnold, 79, of Alamogordo.

His journey through this life reached its final destination on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, in Las Cruces.
The hallmarks of Dan's life – his kindness, good nature, humor and thoughtful consideration of others – remained with him to the end.

Dan was born near Las Lunas on July 16, 1935. He proudly served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1953 to 1959, where Dan was awarded Sharpshooter Badges in 1957 and 1958. He began his 48-year career at Holloman A.F.B. in 1955. Starting out as a camera operator helper, Dan eventually became a data assessor. For decades, he went to work in the overnight hours while the world slept. Dan was rarely seen without his faithful coffee mug, which was handcrafted from Darnold Plumbing scraps. He retired from New Mexico Technology Group, or NewTec, in 2003.
Many in Alamogordo will remember Dan as the Sunday school bus driver who, for years, gave them the opportunity to attend services at the First Baptist Church. He single-handedly kept the old busses running with not much more than bailing wire and bubble gum.
Also when traditional country music was played on a Saturday night, Dan was likely to be seen showing off his long stride on the dance floor. He and his longtime companion, Sharon Burrell, traveled across the country, dancing to country and western swing music. Most of all, Dan loved to visit with people, and they loved it when he did.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lois Darnold; brother Richard Darnold and daughter Julie Darnold.

Dan is survived by his life partner, Sharon Burrell; sons, Mike Darnold and Joel Darnold; Joel's wife, Lisa Darnold; brothers, Paul Dean Darnold and Johnny Darnold; and sisters-in-law, Virginia Darnold, Kathy Darnold, and Charlotte Darnold.

The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, at Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 E. First St., with a celebration of Dan's life at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Those who attend will have an opportunity to honor Dan with a personal statement during the service.

The family has requested any memorial contributions be made in Dan's name to the New Mexico Chapter of the , www.alz.org/newmexico, or Mesilla Valley Hospice, www.mvhospice.org.

"Yet I trust, in the last great roundup, when the rider shall cut the big herd,
"That the cowboys shall be represented in the earmark and brand of the Lord;
"To be shipped to the bright mystic regions over there in green pastures to lie,
"And led by the crystal still waters in that home of the sweet by and by."
