Early on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, we lost a great husband, father, brother, son, uncle and friend when USN retired ATCM Daniel Edward Meents unexpectedly went to heaven.
He was the son of Constance and Edward Meents, of Alamogordo, who survive him. He was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1949. In 1968 he graduated from high school in Sioux Falls. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1969.
He was stationed in Norfolk, Va.; Atlanta, Ga.; Jacksonville, Fla.; El Paso and Dallas. In 1999, he retired as the command master chief of VAW 78 in Norfolk. He also worked for the U.S. Customs in Washington, D.C.
He lived with his family in Norfolk until recently moving to Robbinsville, N.C., in late 2009. He loved his new home in the Great Smoky Mountains.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Madeline, and his son Phillip, of Bristow, Va. He is also survived by his parents; his mother-in-law, Nellie Phillips, of Robbinsville, N.C.; his brother-in-law Alan Phillips, of Petersburg, Va.; his brother Michael Meents, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his sister Julie Estabrooks, of Columbia, Mo. He has extended family in Robbinsville, N.C.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Columbia, Mo. He also had many friends all over the country who will miss him.
He was predeceased by his father-in-law, William Dallas Phillips, his grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.
A celebration of his life will be held at Stecoah Baptist Church in Robbinsville Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at 2 p.m. where military rites will be conducted by Eller Rogers American Legion Post 192 and Carringer Webster VFW Post 8635. Visitation will be an hour before the service.
