Daniel James Novak Obituary
He loved well and was content to the end. Daniel James Novak, 93, longtime resident of Alamogordo, was welcomed peacefully into the arms of Jesus December 26, 2017, in Huber Heights, Ohio. Funeral Mass was held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Huber Heights, OH on December 29, 2017. A funeral Mass and internment will be held at St. Jude Parish, 1404 College Ave in Alamogordo, NM on January 8 at 11 AM. All are invited to pray the Rosary with the St. Jude Rosary Society and the family at 10:15 AM.

Daniel was born to Samuel and Florence Novak in Marquette, Michigan on May 13, 1924; he was raised in Gary, Indiana. Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served with the 5th Army in North Africa and Italy during WWII as a forward radio operator. He often shared stories and pictures of his many adventures during the war and expressed his admiration for his American and British colleagues. He liberated a priest in Italy and was able to get a tour of the Vatican and see the Pope because of that priest. After the war, he attended Brigham Young University and Seattle University, earning a degree in Physics. Always up for adventure, he worked in Alaska and then the jungles of Venezuela as a seismographer for an oil company, also spending time in Port of Spain, Trinidad where he met his future wife, Mary Helen, whom he showed unwavering love and devotion for 58 years. They moved to Alamogordo in 1958 where they raised 6 children, were devout and active in their church, and gave much time, prayer and compassion to many, including regular visits to residents at Good Samaritan Society-Betty Dare for several years.

Dan worked for over 35 years for Dynalectron/Dyncorp as the chief photo planner for the High Speed Test Track at Holloman Air Force Base and had several technical papers published. His passion was photography and during the war he processed and printed his own pictures in a makeshift darkroom in the back of a truck. He also enjoyed traveling and attended many of his WWll reunions. Dan embodied the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. God answered his daily prayer that the Lord would make him an instrument of His peace - all those who knew him were blessed by his sweet, pleasant and gentle spirit.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen. He is survived by his siblings Warren, Gene, and Ann; children and their spouses Catherine (Dennis) May, Jeanie (Richard) Murrow, Roger Novak (Wendy Kliewer), Bernadette (Steve) Mills, Heather (Rusty) Baldwin, Gerald Novak (Anna-Marie Hawkins), 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Friends may sign the Guest Book online at Legacy.com or in person after the Mass. All are welcome to greet family members at the luncheon in the St. Jude Fellowship Hall following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Father James B. Hay Catholic School, 1000 E 8th St, Alamogordo, NM 88310.
