David Martin Mourning Obituary
David Martin Mourning, 65, passed peacefully on June 6, 2017 at Poudre Valley Hospital, Ft. Collins, Colorado, from respiratory complications.

David was born April 22, 1952 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Robert and Elvi Mourning. The family moved to the southwest in 1954, residing first in Arizona several years before settling in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where David and his siblings grew up and attended Alamogordo public schools and David made many lifelong friends. After high school, David lived in California briefly before returning to live in Colorado with family members, and then returned to New Mexico in 1989 where he lived until 2011, wherein he relocated back to Colorado. He later earned his GED through course work and tutoring from Luna Technical Community College in Las Vegas, New Mexico. David also was employed through many work programs associated with the mental health facilities he was part of.

David had a passion for astronomy and science and studied voraciously, despite his battle with mental illness. He enjoyed discussing the stars and conversing about the universe and its mystery to all who would listen. David also had a love for music and a keen ability to remember when a song was released, by what artist, and if it made it to the billboard charts! He memorized many of his favorite songs and would sing along when he heard them. He enjoyed attending concerts and dancing when the music so moved him. When he was a teenager, David was an athlete, competing in track and weight lifting. While living in California, he enjoyed swimming and surfing. He was an avid Broncos fan and enjoyed getting together with family during the holidays to watch his team. David will be most remembered for his gentle spirit and the love he had for his family, including his many nieces and nephews and their children. His release from his very difficult battle with mental illness was bittersweet, but his family is comforted in knowing he has eclipsed to his favorite places beyond this galaxy and is experiencing true peace and healing with God.

David was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Gayle Sauer(June 7, 1989) and his mother, Elvi (January 1, 2017). He is survived by his father Robert of Alamogordo, his brother Eric (Lana) of Grand Junction, CO; Guinevere (Michael Cozens) of Las Vegas, NM; Anne Marie (Steve Long) of Aurora, CO, and Laura of Grand Junction, CO., 10 nieces and nephews, 26 great nieces and nephews, and 7 great-great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for David will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Alamogordo on August 6th at 1:00 pm.
