Dee Alton Umberson Obituary
The very kind and loving heart of Dee Alton Umberson stopped on Nov. 24, 2011, after almost 91 years of a full life and 61 one years of happy marriage.
Dee was born in Lockney, Texas, on Dec. 2, 1920, the only child of Ercel and Alma Umberson. As a young boy, Dee's family spent a year living in Hot Springs, igniting a love in Dee's heart for the Land of Enchantment. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp, serving in Greenland as a radio control tower operator. After the war, he returned home to Dimmitt, Texas, where he met and married a brown-eyed girl named Nona Bradley.
Within a few years, Dee and Nona had two girls and had moved to Alamogordo. Dee began a career as a civilian supporting Air Force electronics programs ranging from rockets to test sleds to fighter aircraft. He retired from Holloman Air Force Base after 27 years of service. Dee and Nona moved to Roswell in 2000.
Dee had life-long interest in photography, gardening, cactus, and all native New Mexico plants. He made countless friends through the years sharing his enjoyment and knowledge of plants and cactus. His expertise in cactus was widely recognized.
Dee is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nona. The couple has two daughters. Dee Ann Kasik and her husband Jim live in Albuquerque and they have two sons, Andrew and Shawn. Dana Adair and her husband Rod live in Roswell and have a daughter, Lauren, and a son, Ian.
A service celebrating Dee's life will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Roswell. Dee will be buried with full military honors at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m.
