Retired from city parks department
Delbert L. Callaway, 92, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Center.
Mr. Callaway was born Sept. 9, 1916, in Basin, Wyo., to Edwin and Osie (Walters) Callaway and moved to Alamogordo in 1927. He served in the Army during World War II under the command of Gen. George Patton, in the 877th Airborne Engineers. He retired from the city of Alamogordo, having worked in the water department and the parks department.
Survivors include a nephew, Robert Callaway, and his wife, M.J., of La Luz; three nieces, Betty Higgins, Evelyn Jefferson and Tina Cornwall, all of Phoenix; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herbert, Roy and Elmer Callaway; a sister, Mary Goldsby; and a nephew, Jim Callaway.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, April 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Monte Vista Cemetery with the Rev. Bart Montgomery officiating. Military honors will be provided by the New Mexico Army National Guard.
Friends may call this evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
