Demetrio ""Dee"" Herrera Montoya Jr., 74
Demetrio ""Dee"" Herrera Montoya Jr., 74, entered into eternal rest in his home in Tularosa on Wednesday, May 19, 2010.
Dee was born in Tularosa on Jan. 9, 1936, and was a lifelong resident. He attended Tularosa High School and graduated in 1955. He worked for Dyncorp/Newtech at Holloman Air Force Base for 40 years, and was a parishioner at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church. He was a member of the Tularosa Optimist Club, Amigos Club and was the chairman of the luminaria program for many years. Dee enjoyed serving his community as a school board member, city council member and especially as mayor of the town he loved so much. He enjoyed hunting, working on his yard and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dee is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; six children, David and wife, Brenda, of Rio Rancho, Judy, of Flagstaff, Ariz., Lisa and husband, Steve, of Tularosa, Sam and wife, Latiza, of La Luz, Teresa, of Alamogordo, and Dee Dee, of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, David James, Jacob, Jenae, Julianna, Mia, Crista, Stevie, Monique and Adrianna; and three great-grandchildren, Demetrius, Marcus and Aubryanna.
He is also survived by two brothers, Nestor and wife, Gloria, of Alamogordo, and James and wife, Wilma, of Nacogdoches, Texas; four sisters, Mary Helen Drake and husband, Wilburn, of Alamogordo, Nina Cano and husband, Ted, of Alamogordo, Doris Salazar, of Tularosa, and Kathy Arnold and husband, Tommy, of Warner Robbins, Ga.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Demetrio Sr.; three brothers, Gilbert, Benny and Tony; and a sister, Adeline.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010, by Matias and Josie Chaves at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in Tularosa. The memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church, with Father Max Hottle, O.F.M., as celebrant. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Tularosa.
He was devoted to his wife, family and community and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
