Dennis Joel "Den" Wills, 71, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, departed this world on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, in Alamogordo, after a short battle with cancer.
Dennis was born Aug. 5, 1937, in St. Paul, Minn., to Loren D. and Pauline A. (Mueller) Wills, and was the eldest of four children. Dennis received his amateur radio license in 1954, and graduated from Harding High School in 1955. Following his graduation, Dennis enlisted in the Air Force and worked for Strategic Air Command as an electronics countermeasure repairman on the B-36 for four years. His jobs allowed him to travel and see many places around the world, including Germany, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, the Bahamas and Chile. He lived to experience and flourish in different cultures, especially Latin and South America, where he became fluent in Spanish. It was while he was working at Cerro Tololo Astronomical Observatory in La Serena, Chile, that he met his wife, Mariana. Dennis returned to Alamogordo where he retired from Pacific Sierra Research at White Sands Missile Range in 1993. He continued to be an avid Amateur Radio Operator, known as "AK5D" to many of his close friends, and received numerous awards for making contacts around the world. He was also a volunteer examiner for amateur radio licenses. Dennis' other interests included classical music, aviation history and reading. Dennis radiated a gentle and kind love toward animals and enjoyed their company, especially that of his "Shorty Paws."
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Mariana Wills, of the family home; a son, Mark Wills, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; a daughter, Pauline Wills, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Douglas Wills and his wife, Jenny, of Eagan, Minn., and Daniel Wills and his wife, Susan, of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Delaine Vitek and her husband, Jack, of Roseville, Minn.; and a dear friend, William "Bill" Leehan and his wife, Jo, of Alamogordo.
