Obituary Condolences

Dewey Stokes, 83, died in his home at 2705 Coronado Drive, Roswell, Monday, Oct. 27, 2008. Services were held at New Mexico Military Institute Chapel Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008. He was born in Midland, Texas, June 18, 1925. His parents, Dewey Stokes Sr. and Leila Smith Stokes, of Truth or Consequences, predeceased him, as did his first wife, Ruth Lunsford Stokes.
He grew up on a ranch near Carrizozo, attended NMMI and served in the infantry during World War II. He worked as a scout for Shell Oil in Midland, and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. Shell moved Dewey to Roswell, where he married Gayle Armstrong. After leaving Shell, he managed the farms and ranches of Armstrong & Armstrong until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gayle; his sons Len and wife, Cheryl, of Alto, Jim and wife, Linda, of Plano, Texas, and Brian and wife, Robyn, of Roswell; daughter Lauri, of Bloomfield, Colo.; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; a sister, Adelin Schauer, of Alamogordo, and her children, Tony and wife, Linda, and Leda and husband, Larry Stock, of High Rolls.
