Dick Smith Obituary
Dick Smith passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at home surrounded by family.
He was born Feb. 22, 1936, the son of Roy and Francis Brabant Smith. He graduated from Ogdensberg (N.Y.) Free Academy in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-59 in Okinawa, Japan. He first married Lois Downey in 1956. That marriage ended in divorce. He then married Loraine Jones in 1980. That marriage ended in divorce.
He first went to work in the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and later retired from the Ogdensburg city fire department in 1991.
He built the Jack Rabbit Flats Volunteer Fire Department in Tularosa. He was a member of the Tularosa Masonic Temple and the AMVETS. He was a past member of the Elks in Ogdensburg.
When he served in the Army, he drove an ambulance in Fort Sam Houston. When he returned to Ogdensburg, he drove the Ogdensburg Volunteer Squad vehicle and was a member of the dive team. Mr. Smith also helped build the Ogdensburg Volunteer Squad on the crescent.
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter Pamela Smith, of Ogdensburg; two sons, Nolan Smith, of Martinez, Ga., and Keith Smith and stepdaughter Mellisa Jones, of Alamogordo; stepson Cory Jones, of Alamogordo; six grandchildren, Amy Guasconi, of Ogdensburg, Michael Wyman, of West Potsdam, N.Y., Elizabeth Champion, of North Carolina, Erin Freiboth, of New Mexico, and Lindsy and Jessica Jones; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Don Awan, of Ogdensburg.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his brother Royal Smith; sisters Shirley Smith, Audrey Haettech and Doris Laflair; and daughter Humdey.
A funeral service will be held Monday, July 30, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Frary Funeral Home in Ogdensburg with the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating.
Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Ogdensburg.
