Dillard Bayless Irby Obituary

Dillard Bayless Irby, 87, long-time local pharmacist, passed away June 5, 2016, in Alamogordo, N.M., after a brief illness.
Dillard was born on Sept. 16, 1928, in Boswell, Okla., to William Bayless and Adria Nell (Florence) Irby. He grew up in Boswell where he attended school until the middle of his high school senior year when he moved to Artesia, N.M. with his family. After graduating from Artesia High School, Dillard attended South West Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. In 1949, while attending Pharmacy College he met and married Jeannene Stiles to whom he was married to for almost 25 years. The couple were blessed with three daughters. Dillard received his Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1951, and immediately went to work as a pharmacist for his father at the family owned Irby Drug in Artesia. That began a Pharmacy career that Dillard was able to enjoy for over 63 years.

During his career, he also worked as a pharmacist in Hagerman, N.M., and Tucumcari, N.M. In 1964, the family moved to Alamogordo where he worked at Rolland Drug Store and Gunning Casteel. In 1976, Dillard married Dorothy (Hurley), whom he described as "being perfect in every way". They were married for 23 years until Dorothy's death in 1999. In 1986, he opened Professional Pharmacy in Tularosa and for the next 30 years Dillard took care of his customers professionally with genuine care and concern for their well-being. Many of his customers considered Dillard a friend and would often just call him "Irby" or "D.B.". When Dillard retired and closed the Pharmacy in 2014, his greatest concern and disappointment was that his loyal customers would have to travel to Alamogordo for their medicines.
Dillard was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church. Dillard was a kind and generous man and had a compassion for people. He was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include, three daughters, Denise Baker and husband Monte of Roswell, N.M., Rene Teller and husband Steve of Alamogordo, and Cheree Dennett of Alamogordo as well as three step children, Sharyn Nedler, Kathy Kommer, Susy Beach and husband Dave all of Alamogordo. Dillard is also survived by his brother Lowell Irby and wife Norberta of Artesia N.M.; 5 grandchildren Dusty Baker and wife Carolyn of Roswell, N.M., and Matt Baker of Roswell, Brian Teller and wife Jody of Midland, Texas, Daniel Teller and wife Kristi of The Woodlands, Texas, and Chelsea Dennett of Alamogordo; additional survivors include Jim Dennett, Ron Nedler and family, and Michelle Strafford all of Alamogordo; 5 great grandchildren Paige and Logan Baker, Jeremiah and Susanna Teller, and Lily Teller, 3 nephews, 1 niece and their families.

Dillard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, and one brother, Eugene Irby.
