Dina Kay Scarafiotti Obituary

There will be one less sweet voice singing carols this Christmas at the Scarafiotti's home in Santa Fe, New Mexico this coming season.

Shirley's youngest daughter, Dina Kay Scarafiotti, 56, passed away on August 6, 2015 in Scottsdale, Arizona after a brief and valiant battle with brain cancer.

A single mother with two daughters, Giavanna and Victoria, she graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in Family Consumer Science in 1994 and in 2008 completed her Master's degree in Education and Program Curriculum from The University of Phoenix. While attending ENMU she was an active member of both New Mexico and ENMU Home Economics Associations. Finding her passion in "teaching" Dina worked as an educator in Morton, Texas, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Grants, New Mexico and, saving the best for last, moved to Alamogordo where she taught at Alamogordo High School for the past ten years.

Alamogordo High School (AHS) provided the right setting for her career to soar and Dina cemented her reputation as a "tireless educator, student mentor and community champion." She wanted others to know of the significance of "Career Pathways" and was especially known for her MAPS Mentorship Program that annually celebrated both students and businesses, in the local community, for working together to "grow the next generation of work force leaders." Dina served as the Advisor and Coordinator of The Boys and Girls State Stater's Program for the past nine years and she was in charge of the AHS annual Veteran's Day Assembly, honoring individuals who served in war. She was an active member of the National Educators Association and was known around campus for encouraging, leading, welcoming, and listening to both students and staff. Dina was currently serving on the Board of the Otero Federal Credit Union and was an active supporter of the Democratic Party.

Dina loved to cook, especially her Grandmother's Clorinda Scarafiotti's spaghetti. She could bake the "best pies ever" and any recipe that called for green chili became her specialty. She was an avid crafter and seamstress who made and gave away hundreds of hand-make gifts for the simple pleasure of "giving" to those she loved.

Dina's love of life and joy in giving will remain her legacy. She dearly loved her family, including daughters, Giavanna Scarafiotti and Victoria Van Winkle and her grandchildren, Pearl, and Dominik. She will forever be remembered for her Legacy of Love.
She is preceded in death by her father Domenic Scarafiotti, Jr. and survived by her daughters, grandchildren, mother, Shirley Scarafiotti and sisters, Vikki Scarafiotti and Nikki Shed.

A scholarship fund has been set up in her honor to continue her legacy of educating young people.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to:
