Don Shuwarger Obituary

Don Shuwarger, 59, died peacefully at his Alamogordo home on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, from pancreatic cancer. Born Dec. 11, 1956, as the only son of Coleman and Beverly Shuwarger, Don, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., attended the University of Southern California where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. He moved to Houston, Texas to attend Baylor College of Medicine where he earned his Medical Doctor degree and remained to complete a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and practiced for many years. He received his MBA from Boston, Mass. Don practiced for the majority of his career in Lynchburg, Va.

In 2008, Don joined the United States Antarctica Program where he served as a physician at both McMurdo Station and The Amundsen-Scott New South Pole Station. For his service, Don was awarded the Antarctica Service Medal by the National Science Foundation. Following this, Don served as the civilian Chief Medical Officer on the US Army base on Kwajalein.

After returning to the US for medical practice in 2011, Don met the love of his life and soon married Penelope Hanson of Billings, Mont. Together they relocated to Alamogordo in 2013, when Don accepted medical directorship of women's services at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center. As a respected friend and leader at GCMC, he considered them a family. Don and Penny built a lovely home together; a sanctuary as Don called it. They enjoyed welcoming their many good friends and colleagues to gather and enjoy their home.

Don was well respected in his field; a member of ACOG, the most prestigious group of Gynecologists, in the United States. Among his many accomplishments, he considered marrying Penelope as his best.

He enjoyed Alamogordo, N.M., as the most welcoming and friendly community he ever lived. Don will be remembered fondly and missed by the many people who had the privilege of knowing him, but mostly by his wife, Penelope. Don thanks you all for being a part of his life.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Beverly Robbins and Coleman Shuwarger and step-parents Don Robbins and Marilyn Shuwarger.

He is survived by the love of his life, perfect partner, and wife Penelope Shuwarger; his daughter Meris Shuwarger D'Anza (and husband Jeff); step-children Brad Svee (and wife Traci), Doug Svee (and wife MacKenzie), Christopher Svee, and Melissa Svee; his brother Lee Shuwarger; sister Zena Hudson (and husband John) and Don's four lovely granddaughters Ren D'Anza, Lilja Svee, Hanna Svee, and Natalie Svee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donation be sent, in Don's name, directly to the Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital Foundation where a fund has been established to support their women's healthcare mission.

A memorial service will be held in the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center conference rooms on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Medical Office Building foyer.
