Donald Ashdown Obituary

Donald Ashdown, 96, died on Dec. 31, 2014, with family in attendance.

A funeral service will take place at the Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1800 23rd Street at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, followed by interment at Monte Vista Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the church, just preceding the funeral.

Ashdown was born April 11, 1918, to Franklin D. and Alfretta B. Ashdown in Bountiful, Utah, where he spent his childhood. He served an LDS mission to east Germany, where he witnessed the uprising of the Nazi movement. He served as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. He completed undergraduate work at Utah State University and graduate work at Cornell University. A Ph. D. in entomology, he was a beloved and nationally-recognized professor at Texas Tech University for 30 years. Married to Theresa Hill Ashdown in 1941, he was the father of 7 children, grandfather of 27, and great-grandfather of 80. At retirement in 1984, he moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he remained until his death. He was a faithful, life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a passionate advocate of higher education. He will be long-remembered for his kindly, warm, and supportive nature and his ready willingness to help others.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Theresa.

He is survived by Dr. Franklin Ashdown, of Alamogordo, Kaye Soderquist, of Logan, Utah, Christine Hamberlin, of Alamogordo, Karen Schiffman, of Ephraim, Utah, Dr. Thomas Ashdown, of Lubbock, Texas, Deborah Bowman, of Tijeras, New Mexico, and Theresa Wardle, of Puyuallup, Washington.

The Ashdown family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
