Dorothy Anita "Dottie" Wemple Obituary

Dorothy "Dottie" Anita Wemple came into the world weighing 10 1/2 pounds on May 11, 1923, to parents Thom and Lois Buchanan Wemple in Shreveport, La.

It was a most difficult delivery, and as a result she was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Her fragile condition caused her to leave school for four years in the early grades. But her greatest strength to endure and succeed in life allowed her to overcome difficulties and succeed as best she could. Her goal was to participate in the medical field. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in Centenary College in Shreveport, La. Four and a half years later, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She worked for a time in medical labs in New Orleans, La., Augusta, Ga., and Richmond, Va., until she secured the opportunity of learning medical techniques in the new field of cancer cell recognition and discovery called Cytology. She had a long and successful career in that field in Boston, first at the Brigham Hospital and then Children's Hospital. Over the years she developed long-lasting friends and admirers. She was proud to be a member of the Park Street Congregational Church in Boston, one of the oldest established churches in America. She was a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Dottie is survived by her sister, Virginia Tepfer, of Alamogordo; nephew Charles South III, of Agoura Hills, Calif., and grand niece Cara South, of Woodinville, Wash.; and her children; Siena, Luca and Coco South Ciero.

Dottie was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Alamogordo. For the last two years she has resided at Casa Arena Blanca.

Services are pending. In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that donations be made for the support of mission work at Grace United Methodist Church.

The family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home. Cremation will take place at PCS.
