Dorothy G. Henderson

Obituary Condolences

Dorothy G. Henderson, 89, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a longtime resident of Alamogordo, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Dorothy was born May 16, 1918, in Manila, the Philippines to Clifford A. and Pacita B. Gardiner. She was raised in Manila and there married Barclay Henderson on March 14, 1941. When the Japanese invaded the Philippines after the attack on Pearl Harbor, both Dorothy and Barclay were captured.
They spent three years interned in concentration camps, first at Santo Tomas in Manila, then at Los Banos, where they were only able to survive because of their faith in God, their sense of humor, and their love for each other. On the very morning that the Japanese had scheduled their guards to execute all of the internees, Army paratroopers and Marines liberated their camp and rescued them all.
Dorothy and Barclay arrived in the U.S. with nothing, but left us with much. Many longtime residents will remember Dorothy's support of Barclay, who managed the Sherwin-Williams Paint store on 10th Street from 1957 until his retirement in 1975.
Dorothy was a Christian and a member of The Christian Church. During her lifetime, she enjoyed membership in the Gerald Champion Hospital Auxiliary, painting, playing cards, arts and crafts, traveling and especially looked forward to family gatherings. She will be dearly missed by her family, by old friends, and by new friends at the Aristocrat where she was a resident.
Survivors include three children, John G. Henderson and his wife Peggy, of Destin, Fla., Terri H. Maynard and her husband Roger, of Roswell, and Clay Henderson, of Alamogordo; three grandchildren, Margo Magnum and her husband Kenn, of Chandler, Ariz., Gail Bianco and her husband Bill, of Amarillo, Texas, and Lisa Denton and her husband Michael, of Destin, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Andre Magnum, Aidan, Devin and Tannon Bianco, and Natalie Denton; and her younger brother, William Gardiner, of Las Vegas, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barclay, in 1995; and her younger sister, Elizabeth Gardiner Box.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at The Christian Church with Pastor Richard Hicks officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill Bianco, Kenn Magnum, Calvin Cooley, Ken White, Pete Hitt and Scott DeFoy. Honorary pallbearer will be Joe Small.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to The Christian Church, 1300 Hawaii Avenue, Alamogordo, NM 88310.
Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
