Dorothy Helen Chandler Dockray Obituary
Dorothy Helen Chandler Dockray passed away June 21, 2013. Dorothy was born May 23, 1924, to Eldridge Jay Chandler and Lorene Paxton Chandler. She was born on the family property located two miles east of Mayhill, which was purchased by her father the previous year. She lived on this land for the next 82 years with only a couple of periods away. She rode a horse to Mayhill Elementary School and then graduated from Cloudcroft High School in 1941. She and Robert Dockray, the love of her life, planned to be married in the summer of 1942, but WWII and Pearl Harbor changed their plans. After a semester of college at Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas, she and Robert were married Dec. 27, 1941. Dorothy and Robert celebrated 71 years of marriage this past December.
Their children, David and Karen, were born during the war and Marsha three years later. Dorothy spent her early adult years being a mother and farm/ranch wife. She could tend a garden, pick apples, bake delicious pies or help with branding the cattle. Canning was one of her specialties and she frequently provided for the whole family. She collected recipes and loved cooking, especially desserts!
In 1956, she began working at the Mayhill Post Office as a clerk. Later, Dorothy became the postmaster and retired after 42 years of service in 1999. Dorothy loved being a postmaster. She treasured interacting with her customers - from weighing the babies to solving mail problems.
Dorothy was amazingly tough and courageous. She had two children to care for by herself during the war. She moved from Mayhill to San Diego, Calif., for a year while Robert was stationed there.
She then returned home when he was shipped out. When Robert returned in 1945, they continued to farm and ranch the Mayhill property. Dorothy was independent continuing to take care of Robert in their Las Cruces home, where they moved in 2006. After years of back problems, she suffered a fractured vertebra in November of 2012. In April of 2013, she could no longer ignore the pain and required surgery. After 10 weeks in the hospital, Dorothy passed away.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Dockray, now living in Cottonbloom Assisted Living Facility, Las Cruces.
In 1995, their first child, David Dockray, passed away.
