Dorothy W. Miller

Obituary Condolences

Longtime Otero County resident Dorothy Miller died in Alamogordo Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at age 93. She was born in Bentonville, Ark., on Jan. 25, 1914, and came to Las Cruces at age 13 after the deaths of both her mother and father.
After graduating from Las Cruces High School, she started college at New Mexico A&M (now New Mexico State University). She met C. Albert Miller and they were married in 1933 at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Las Cruces. There were three children born to the marriage - Alberta, born in 1934; Margene, born in 1943; and Charles, born in 1946.
Albert's father and mother, Dr. C.A. and Laura Miller, homesteaded outside Tularosa in 1907, with Laura and the two boys staying on the homestead while Dr. Miller stayed in town with his medical practice.
Albert and Dorothy came to Alamogordo in 1956 and owned and operated Miller's of Alamogordo dress shop until 1973. They were involved in the community with the chamber of commerce, community concerts, Grace United Methodist Church and Friends of the Library, among other activities.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, in 1977; and her daughter, Alberta Pinkerton, in 1975.
She is survived by daughter Margene Harris and her husband Dennis, of San Antonio; son Charles Miller, of Denver; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Her interests included doll collecting, antiques, A.V. Chapter of P.E.O., and her church, where she was a long time alto in the choir and active in United Methodist Women. A resident of La Luz since 1977, she greatly enjoyed her century-old adobe home, which was closer to a museum with all of her dolls and antiques. She recently had been a resident of Aristocrat Assisted Living Center. For those who knew her, she will long be remembered for her stubborn independence, as well as her faithfulness to friends and family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 16th Street and Cuba Avenue, with the Rev. Tom Richardson and the Rev. Mary Taken officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Charles Pinkerton, Tim Wier, Jeff Miller, Phil Miller, Travis Harris, Wesley Campbell, Matthew Harris and Greg McBride.
Friends may call Monday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
Should friends desire, memorial gifts may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1206 Greenwood Lane, Alamogordo, NM 88310, or to the Friends of the Library, 920 Oregon, Alamogordo, NM 88310.
