Edward E. Scarbrough Obituary

Edward E. Scarbrough passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016, at his home in Albuquerque. He was 92. Edward was born in Ralls, Texas on Feb. 13, 1924, to John Henry and Sarah Scarbrough.

The family moved to Leveland, Texas, where he spent his youth. After a stint in the Merchant Marine in World War II, he enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University where he met and married Virginia Waldrop of Tatum, N.M. Ed and Virginia taught in the public school system in Cloudcroft before settling in Alamogordo, where they raised four children and lived for 63 years. After teaching, Ed became a State Farm Insurance Agent for 30 years until his retirement in 1987. Ed and Virginia were members of the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ, where Ed served as a Deacon for many years.

One of Ed's joys was travel. He and Virginia became world travelers after his retirement and visited every state in the US and 5 continents. They were members of the Good Sam Club and went on many memorable road trips. Other interests were collecting coins and stamps, playing 42 with friends, and working crossword puzzles.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his six brothers, and his beloved daughter, Sonya Scarbrough of Charleston, West Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Scarbrough of Albuquerque, his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Becky Scarbrough of Gallup, his daughter Janeice Scarbrough of Portales, and daughter Diana Scarbrough of Albuquerque. He is also survived by three grandsons, Jarrod Scarbrough of Tampa, Florida, Eric Scarbrough of Denver, Colorado, and Eamon Scarbrough of Portales, and two great grandchildren, Mason Scarbrough of Denver and Alegra Scarbrough of Tampa.

Funeral services for Edward will be at 10 a.m., Friday, July 15, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, 1334 Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, officiated by Al Maxey, minister at the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.

The Scarbrough family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the services.
