Retired Cloudcroft teacher
Edwin R. "Ed" Haseloff, 69, of Cloudcroft, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Lincoln County Medical Center.
Mr. Haseloff was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Margaret, Texas, to Charles and Nadine (McCurley) Haseloff. He graduated from Dumas (Texas) High School in 1956. He then attended West Texas State University, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and graduated in 1961 with a B.S. degree in biology.
He taught in Plains, Texas, then moved to Oregon, where he was a science teacher for two years. He met Lynette Palmer and they married Aug. 19, 1967, in Hermiston, Ore. They moved to Cloudcroft, where he was a science teacher and track coach for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He had been a two-time qualifier for the International Science Fair, and was named the New Mexico State Science Teacher of the Year. An Eagle Scout, he was a former camp director of Camp Dale Ressler for the Boys Scouts of America in Cloudcroft. He also was a real estate agent for nearly two decades, and was a member of the Otero County Electric Co-op board of directors from 1992 to 2004.
He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, outfitter and guide. His happiest times were when he was hunting and sharing his passion for hunting with his grandchildren, who called him "Papa Ed."
Survivors include two daughters, Talley Lyles and her husband Barry, and Tori Bowen and her husband Aaron, all of Artesia; four grandchildren, Jordan Lyles and Fallon, and Cash and Emmy Bowen, all of Artesia; a brother, Gary Haseloff, of Austin, Texas; his former wife Lynette Haseloff, of Tularosa; and nieces and nephews in Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sherry Beth.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Cloudcroft High School Gymnasium with Charles R. Walker officiating.
Interment will follow in James Canyon Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barry Lyles, Aaron Bowen, Clinton Varbel, Randell Mansell, Dan Field, Tim Earthman, Tiger Stanbrough and David Lane. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Edwards, Ivan Meads, Don Lane, Jim Mills, Wayne King, Patrick Bowen, Gaylon Whitley and Chris Scott.
Friends may call Saturday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
