Elisabeth (Mueller) Grace Obituary
Elisabeth Mueller Grace, 87, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in Alamogordo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Walter Grace, who passed away in September 2006. Survivors include her son David and wife, Patti, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; son Lance and wife, Cathy, of Alamogordo; son Jeff and wife, Patti, of Blue Island, Ill.; and her five grandchildren, Kyle, Brittany, Tyler, Kevin and Clayton. She is also survived by her brother Carl Mueller, of San Pedro, Calif., and sister Irene Mueller, of Blue Island.
Elisabeth was born in Chicago on Christmas Day 1924 to her German immigrant parents, Carl and Emma (Bauer) Mueller. Like so many immigrant children, Elisabeth learned her second language, English, when she attended kindergarten and quickly became the communicator for the family - a trait she carried on for the remainder of her life. In her youth, she became an active member of her church, Faith United, where she joined her group of beloved friends, the Friendly Girls, and remained an active member for over 75 years. During World War II, Elisabeth served her country as a SPAR in the Coast Guard. Of the 100 returning veterans from Faith United, she was the only female.
In 1949, Elisabeth met the love of her life, Walter. They were married in October and the following July, David was born. Lance and Jeff quickly followed. They moved from Chicago to Blue Island, a southern suburb of Chicago. After years of school, baseball, basketball, Boy Scouts and other assorted activities, their boys went off to college and became the first three college graduates in the almost 800-year documented history of her family.
After the boys left home, Liz and Wally were able to travel the world together, normally accompanied by some of their many close friends.
Elisabeth will be remembered by friends, family and all she encountered throughout her life as a strong individual who was dedicated to her husband and family; loved to carry on a lively conversation about almost any subject; and enjoyed walking, traveling the world, exploring and classical music. Her last wishes were to join her husband, Wally, in two ways: proudly buried with his remains at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and together for eternity in the afterlife.
A ceremony for the interment of her cremains will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ at 9411 S. 51st Ave. in Oak Lawn, Ill. The family will greet friends after the memorial service at Pilgrim Faith and later at Jeff and Patti's home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ are greatly appreciated.
The Grace family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. To sign the online register book, please visit
