Elizabeth Louise Hursh Smith Obituary

Elizabeth Louise Hursh Smith was born on August 14, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Frank Herbert, Sr. and Ora Lela (Brewer) Hursh. She was the oldest of 2 children and lived in Alamogordo, N.M., for most of her life. She married Robert (Bob) G. Smith, with whom she enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage, on August 16, 1949, in Wichita Falls, Texas. They settled in Alamogordo in the early 1960s and raised their two adopted daughters there. She and Bob helped found Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1966. She was a member of Gideons Women's Auxiliary, was Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Wichita Falls, and was Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls in Alamogordo.

Elizabeth loved to sew, crochet, embroider, and cook. Above all, though, she loved to serve and help those around her with whatever they needed. She had the gift of hospitality, and everyone was welcome in their home. She kept a pot roast in the oven most Sunday mornings so that someone could be invited over to eat lunch in good company and on good china!

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her husband Bob in August of 2014. Other close family members who also preceded her in death were her brothers-in law Mark and Art Smith, her sister-in-law Melissa McIntire, and her cousin John Hursh and his wife Edith.

She is survived by her brother Frank Herbert Hursh, Jr. of Queretaro, Mexico; two daughters, Louise Smith and Renee Brown; four grandchildren, Amy Epting and husband Adam, Tim Brown and wife Cayla, Robert Brown and wife Diana, and Heather Miller and husband Darin; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces Holly Hursh and husband Juan Carlos, Kathy Hursh, Hutsien Brown, Lorrie Tyner and husband David, and Ruth McIntire; nephews Bill Smith and wife Kathleen, Don Smith and wife Judy, and Stephen McIntire; several great-grandnieces and nephews. Other close family members and friends include Joel Brown and wife Kathy, Dave and Lucille Davis, Dina Honeycutt, Carl Hursh, and John Hursh.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Aristocrat for the amazing care and service they provided Elizabeth over the past 20 months. They would also like to thank the staff of Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center and the staff of Alamogordo Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate a donation to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Gideons International. Thank you!

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 27th, at 10 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alamogordo, NM. Pastor Shelby Moon will officiate.

The Smith family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the services.
