Longtime Member of St. Jude Mission
Elizabeth (Betty) McHugh Gaynor, 82, died on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, in Alamogordo. She was born on March 21, 1926, to Bernard Benjamin and Josephine Major McHugh, in Coniston, Ontario, Canada. The family immigrated to the Southwest in June 1958 and obtained US citizenship in 1963.
Betty was a charter member of St. Jude Alter Rosary Society, a Blue Army member and a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Post 7686.
She is survived by a son, James Victor Gaynor of Truth of Consequences; two daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Powell and husband Joseph of Pass Christian, MS and Mary Catherine Gaynor of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandsons Stephen Powell of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Christopher Powell of Biloxi, MS and Shawn Amburgey and wife Lanessa of Rio Rancho; great grandsons, Eric Gerard Powell and Jayce T. Powell of Collinsville, Ill. and Traeh Amburgey of Rio Rancho and great granddaughter Kaidance Amburgey, of Rio Rancho. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ruth Marie Young and her husband, Martin of Mississauga, Ontario and nieces, nephews and cousins in Ontario.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at St. Jude Mission with Father Wayne D. Herpin, S.J., Celebrant.
Inurnment will follow at St. Jude Mission Columbarium.
The Gaynor family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral arrangements. Cremation has taken place locally at PCS.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Mission Parish Building Fund.
