Retired dietitian
Ella Sidwell, 84, of Alamogordo, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society, Betty Dare.
Ella was born in New York City on Sept. 5, 1924, to Harry and Miriam (Hatin) Wishor. She graduated from New York University with a degree in dietetic studies. In 1946 she relocated to San Francisco to work in a veterans hospital, and later transferred to Indian Health Services in Albuquerque to continue her work. In 1948 she transferred to the Fort Stanton Marine Hospital in Fort Stanton. She married George "Jiggs" Sidwell on June 18, 1949. She lived and worked 40 years as a dietitian, caseworker and rancher in Lincoln County. She retired and relocated to High Rolls in 1987 where she lived for 20 years before moving to Alamogordo. During her time in High Rolls, she volunteered her services at High Rolls Elementary School, the High Rolls Trinity Baptist Church and King's Treasure in Alamogordo.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Bash and her husband, James Holt, and Carol Ruiz and her husband, Pete, all of High Rolls; a son, Tom Sidwell, and his wife, Mimi, of Tucumcari; a stepdaughter, Betty Hobbs, of Tularosa; two stepsons, Leroy Sidwell and his wife, Mickey, of Chama, and Jerry Sidwell and his wife, Evelyn, of Nogal; 20 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jiggs, in 1991; and a stepson, Richard Sidwell.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Santa Rita Catholic Church in Carrizozo on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Father Franklin Eichhorst, O.F.M., as celebrant.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Carrizozo.
Pallbearers will be Ben Sidwell, Jesse Bash, Nathan Fuchs, Evan Staeden, James Holt and Pete Ruiz.
Friends may call Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
