Elsie Basinger, 84, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, in Alamogordo, where she lived for the past 30 years.
Elsie was born on July 24, 1924, to Earl and Elsie (Nicholas) Edgar in Shamrock, Okla. On April 5, 1942, she married Arthur Basinger.
Elsie was a wonderful Christian lady who taught children's classes at church for many years and loved to read the Bible. Elsie was a member of Eternity Baptist Church. She was a homemaker for many years and her greatest joy was being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Elsie was a great cook, seamstress and talented self-taught artist. Her paintings and quilts were cherished gifts. Elsie was employed by Fisher Body in Tecumseh from 1965-1973. She retired from New Mexico State School for the Blind in 1989.
Elsie is survived by four daughters, Beverly (Bob) Evans of Alamogordo, Carol Salazar of Las Cruces, Blanche (Jim) Sword of Adrian, Mich., and Cherie (Jerrold) Brinkley of Williamsburg, Va.; former husband, Arthur Basinger; 12 grandchildren: Tim (Pasty) Ladd, of Las Cruces, Matt (Claire) Flotte, of Cloudcroft, Susan (Alex) Maynez, of Alamogordo, Jason (Andrea) Evans, of Albuquerque, Deana Case, of Oklahoma, Laura (Gary) Stieglitz, of Goshen, Ind., Michelle (Jeff) Pendergrass, of Midland, Texas, Stephanie Salazar, of Las Cruces, Angie (Tom) Lewis of Adrian, Andrew (Marta) Sword, of Pittsburgh, Philip (Felicitas) Berry, of Germany, Dawn Berry, of Virginia Beach, Va., Joshua Ward, of Williamsburg, and Amber Ward, of Williamsburg; 28 great-grandchildren, her sister Blanche Hambrook, of Seymour, Tenn.; and two sister-in-laws, Rhea Edgar, of Morenci, and Dolores Edgar, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Melvin, Carson and Dale Edgar. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted at Eternity Baptist Church, 1205 25th St. at 11 a.m. Jan. 16, 2009. Memorials may be made to the church.
A graveside service will be conducted in Jasper Mich., in the spring.
The Basinger family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral arrangements.
