Elsie Davis Obituary
Elsie Davis, a resident of the Clyde Nursing Center, and formerly of Alamogordo, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011, in Clyde, Texas. She was 87 years old and has gone to heaven.
Elsie was born in South Bend, Ind., on July 8, 1923, to Stephen and Margaret Horvath Vanslager. She married Ray E. Davis on Jan. 16, 1952, in Waco, Texas. She had lived in Alamogordo for 57 years before moving to Clyde in 2009. She owned and operated Davis Cleaning Service.
She had been a member of the Garden Club of Alamogordo. Elsie was a lover of plants, flowers and animals - especially cats - and was an accomplished musician. She played in area fiddle competitions, along with playing in the Alamogordo orchestra and theater productions. She had been champion fiddler of Texas in the early 1950s.
Elsie loved her children, grandchild, extended family and many friends. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Baird, Texas.
She is survived by daughters Patricia Austin and her husband, Richard, of Baird, Gail Norvell, of Las Cruces, Colleena Shriver and her husband, Clifford, and Laverne Mason and her husband Jerry, all of Baird; sons Ray Davis Jr., of Alamogordo, and William E. Mitchell and his wife, Judy, of Graham, Texas; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husband and grandson Christopher.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Baird, with Pastor Jimmy Hatcher officiating.
Viewing and visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at the church.
Parker Funeral Home of Baird is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service is planned in Alamogordo at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Big Country and Rescue the Animals.
