Elsie Joy Worrell Obituary
We lost our sweet Grandma Joy, Elsie Joy Worrell, of Alamogordo, on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Hollis, Okla., on April 20, 1916, to William "Willie" James Sheid and Hixie Roena Cunningham Sheid.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn Doyle Worrell, in 1988 and her granddaughter, Teresa Riley Taylor, in 2003.
Survivors include her four children, Bobby Lynn Worrell and his wife, Theda, of Wynnewood, Okla.; Roena Beth Worrell Riley, of Clinton, Okla.; Elaine Nowell and her husband, Lonnie, of Tularosa; and John Walton Worrell and his wife, Veronica, of Norman, Okla. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Elsie Joy was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1957 and a Sunday school teacher for many years, and she really enjoyed teenagers.
Elsie Joy Worrell was beloved by her family and friends. She was a Christian mother and friend to so many people. She had accomplished so much in her lifetime. She was an excellent seamstress and chef, famous for her chocolate cake. She loved to travel and was always on the go. We had to check her calendar in order to schedule a visit. She worked at the Fashion Fabrics, at the commissary and was an accountant for the civil engineering department at Holloman Air Force Base where she retired. While in Hollis, Elsie Joy and Doyle were famous for their sweet potatoes, watermelons and cantaloupe. She taught herself how to drive an automobile and tractor on the farm.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2011, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at First Baptist church with Bill Campbell officiating.
Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
The family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the funeral services. To sign the online register book, please visit www.hamiltonodell.com.
