Elsie (Huston) Keys

1908 - 2008 Obituary Condolences
Elsie Huston Keys, 99, of Alamogordo, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Elsie was born June 9, 1908 in Falmouth, Ky., to Bertha Lach Huston and Frank Nelson Huston, the youngest of nine children, all born at home. As an infant she and her family moved near Columbus, Ind., as there were better opportunities for schooling for the children.
Elsie graduated from Columbus High School and, at 16, moved to New York City. She worked in various positions and was there during the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. She witnessed Lindberg's ticker tape parade and saw Babe Ruth hit a home run. She saw the effects of Prohibition and even went to a speakeasy or two. During World War II, Elsie felt she needed to help her country and enlisted in the Navy WAVES. Shortly after Pearl Harbor she found herself on a ship going to Hawaii. The interesting thing about Mom's stint in the Navy is that she could not learn to swim. After World War II she returned to Columbus and began work as an electrologist (removal of unwanted hair with an electric needle).
In the second phase of her life, Elsie met and married Edmund Grant Keys. They had one daughter, Carol Anna. Both Ed and Elsie were in their 40s with this new baby which brought many changes. Ed worked in several places in Indiana as a drug representative for Abbott Laboratories. Always a displaced cowboy, Ed moved the family to West Texas, and ultimately Elsie and Carol found homes in New Mexico.
Mom was living history. She went from buggies and wagons to Model A's and airplanes. From no electricity, she saw the evolution of movies, silent then talkies, television and ultimately the Internet. Always interested in politics and current events, Elsie probably should have gone into law as she was a master at debate. A talented and strong woman, Elsie Huston Keys passes on a great legacy.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Keys and her husband Greg Haussler of Capitan; three grandchildren, Pete Haussler and his wife Tara, of Georgia, Andrea Griego and her husband Adam, of Colorado, and Annalise Haussler of El Paso; and five great grandchildren, Auburn Davidson, Taite Haussler and Kurt Haussler, all of Georgia, and Alex Griego and Anthony Griego of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edmund, in 1961; three brothers; and five sisters.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in June in Nashville, Ind.
Graveside services at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery will be announced later.
