A kind and generous man
Epimenio Barela Lucero, 89, of Alamogordo, passed away Tuesday, July 15, from cancer. He was born June 2, 1919, in Roswell, the son of Samuel and Damiana Lucero.
Epimenio (Sam, Tio) was a stationary steam engineer at Torrance Memorial Hospital in Torrance, Calif., before retiring and returning to Alamogordo. In retirement, Epimenio volunteered at the local senior citizen center and the Alamogordo Counseling Center and he repaired items for the Zia thrift store.
During WWII, Epimenio served in the Navy aboard the USS Topeka and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He saw action in the South Pacific, the Aleutian Islands and the initial fleet into Tokyo Bay.
He was also a member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included fishing with his family and friends and repairing things around the house and for his neighbors.
Epimenio is survived by his son, Arthur S. Lucero (Joan) in Mission Viejo, Calif.; his daughter, Adelina V. Lucero in Alamogordo; four grandchildren, Laura McMahon (Michael) and Luis Lucero in Mission Viejo, Adriana Schlarb (Chris) in Long Beach and Amparo Lucero in San Pedro; and two great-granddaughters, Jessica and Nicole Lucero; his brother, Antonio Lucero in Roswell; along with nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Salazar Lucero, and his son, Robert G. Lucero. 
He was a kind and generous person and will be missed by his family and friends.
A rosary will be recited by Deacon Don Dickman at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Alamogordo Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Deacon Don Dickman as celebrant.  
There will be a catered lunch following the cemetery service at the Knights of Columbus.
Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home before the rosary.
The Lucero family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
