Master sergeant, U.S. Air Force, retired
Ernesto J. "Ernie" Rivera, 59, a resident of Alamogordo, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008.
Ernie was born Sept. 13, 1948, in Marfa, Texas, to Ernesto and Rosa Rivera. He graduated from Ector High School in Odessa, Texas, in 1967. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, served 25 years - including in Vietnam - and retired as a master sergeant in 1992. He returned to school and received his bachelor's of business administration from New Mexico State University in 1996.
He worked in El Paso, Texas, for many years with Hasbro and Mesilla Valley Transportation. Recently he worked as the physical education teacher for Legacy Christian Academy in Alamogordo, where he loved working and teaching the kids.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Socorro "Sukie" Rivera, of the family home; his daughters Starley Ryan and her husband, Rob, of Chandler, Ariz., and Stacy Moralez and her husband, Arturo, of Ruidoso; three grandchildren, Tori Vega, Art Moralez and Brynn Moralez; his mother, Rosa Rivera Brown, of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Raymond Rivera, and his wife Norma, of Odessa; a sister, Dora Vasquez, and her husband, Robert, of Odessa; and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 12, at Christ Community Church, 2960 N. Scenic Drive, with Pastor Jack Brock and Pastor Michael Griffin officiating.
Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in the Little Chapel in the Desert Columbarium at Christ Community Church.
