Esther Katherine "Kay" Hughes

Obituary Condolences

Esther Katherine "Kay" Hughes passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010. No services will be held per her wishes. Interment will be beside her husband at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.
Kay was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Fort Morgan, Colo., to Buffington Jackson and Pearl Estell Martin. After graduating from high school, she went to Denver to attend business college and met E.J. (Ben) Hughes, who was in college also. They married in March 1941 and moved to New Mexico with their baby daughter in 1945. They lived in Roswell and had two more children, another daughter and a son. When the Air Force base in Roswell closed, they moved to Alamogordo where Ben worked as a pharmacist. They moved back to Roswell in the mid 1970s. Ben passed away in 1986 and Kay lived alone, enjoying visits to her daughters in Las Vegas, Nev., and two grandsons living in Roswell. She loved playing bridge with her friends at the Roswell Adult Center and moved to Las Cruces with her son and daughter-in-law just last year.
Kay Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one great-grandson. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Bayless and her husband, Charles, of Henderson, Nev., and Patsi Hughes, of Las Vegas, Nev., and her son Jim Hughes and his wife, Edie, of Las Cruces. Kay has eight grandchildren: Robert, Laura and Kathy Edwards; Stoney (Pat), Sam and Matthew Beal; and James and Jeff Hughes. She also has 12 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Mission Arch Care Center in Roswell and Casa de Oro Care Center in Las Cruces for the wonderful care they gave Kay the last few years of her life.
Arrangements are with La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home, 555 West Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
