Evelyn C. Groll Obituary
Evelyn C. Groll, 75, of Alamogordo, N.M., entered into eternal life on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. She died in hospice in Glendale, Ariz., of complications of Alzheimer's.

The oldest of three children, she was born in New York City in 1935 to William and Fay Eskowitz. From an early age, Evelyn was passionate about service and was known throughout her community for helping others. In 1954, she graduated from Teaneck High School, Teaneck, N.J. A caption from her high school yearbook characterized her life of service: "It is splendid to give everything and to ask for nothing."

In 1956, she received her Registered Nursing degree from Holy Name School of Nursing in Teaneck, NJ, and proudly served in that profession until her retirement in 1996. In April 1959, Evelyn married Raymond A. Groll, an Airman in the U.S. Air Force, in Dumont, NJ. As their family grew, they were stationed throughout the country and overseas in service to the nation. In 1969, the family moved to Raymond's new duty station at Holloman Air Force Base, NM. Raymond died of cancer in 1973.

During her 38 years in Alamogordo, Evelyn gave selflessly of her time at St. Jude Parish. She served as Eucharistic minister, provided rides and relief to the homebound of the parish, and created an in-home Hospice nursing service to those in need. Following her 1996 retirement, she traveled on religious pilgrimage trips to Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Fatima, Portugal, to honor the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These visits inspired her to help found the St. Jude Altar Rosary Society. She lovingly managed the Midnight Adoration schedule at local-area Catholic churches. Throughout her life, Evelyn stayed true to her high school prophecy: Give everything and ask for nothing.

She is survived by her brothers, Bro. John B. Chaney, New Rochelle, NY, and Major (USA ret.) Kenneth P. Chaney, Newport News, VA; her children, Catherine Groll, Lansing, MI; Denise Garvis, Lansing, MI; Timothy Groll, Lansing, MI; Tracy A. Brown, Tularosa, NM; Stephen Groll, Las Cruces, NM, and Kenneth Groll, Glendale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First Street, by Father Tom Hoffman, S.J. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at St Jude Parish with Father Tom Hoffman, S.J., Celebrant. Evelyn will be buried beside her husband in a private service on Thursday, June 24, 2011 at Ft Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude Parish, 1404 College Ave, Alamogordo, NM 88310 or Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave, 7th Floor, NY, NY 10001.

The Groll family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the funeral services.
