Fern graduated from high school at 15 and worked in a department store in downtown Los Angeles with the help a teacher and an amended birth certificate. She met the love of her life, Barney Prather, in 1945 and they married in 1946. Wherever they lived, California, Texas, Oklahoma or Alamogordo, they made a great, hard working team. They worked for companies such as Convair, McDonald Douglas and Hugh Aircraft at Holloman Air Force Base. In 1960, rather than transfer to Florida or Southern California they managed the Alamogordo branch of TBL Insurance Adjusters. They also enjoyed their ranch home near Tularosa gardening, raising alfalfa and tending various livestock. In 1973 Barney died suddenly. Four years later Fern married Ray Sides, who was retired Air Force. He was also an insurance adjuster and very active in Sertoma. They enjoyed an active life together until Ray passed away in 1989. Fern loved and enjoyed her children and grandchildren and even wanted to see them compete in athletic events. She also continued to be active in the St. Johns Episcopal alter guild, keeping her yard and home immaculate, reading, sewing, quilting and enjoying jigsaw puzzles.
