Florence Alene Mitchell Obituary
Mrs. Mitchell passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at the age of 82. Alene, or "Flo," as she was known at Betty Dare, was born Dec. 25, 1928, in Rondo, Ark., the youngest of eight children to Thomas Jefferson and Florence Comitney (Smith) Davis.
She attended school in Helena, Ark., and married James W. "Mitch" Mitchell Sr. in 1945. They were married almost 49 years until his death in 1994. Alene had resided in Alamogordo since 1997 having moved from North Macintosh in Torrance County, N.M.
She was a longtime resident of New Mexico. Alene was truly a fun loving person with an incredible sense of humor and a lovely voice, breaking into song without ever realizing it. She adored and advocated for children, any and all of them. She previously served on the board of directors and was actively involved in the Ophelia Polk Moore Home for Children in Helena. She loved to dance and taught her young children, as well as the neighborhood kids, to dance, making her the "Jitterbug Queen" for a time. She managed an insurance agency in the 1960s. She retired from Safeway Stores Inc. in 1986. She was a joy to all who knew her.
Besides her parents and husband, Alene was preceded in death by her three sisters, four brothers and her special friend, George Murphy.
She is survived by her children James W. "Mitch" Mitchell Jr. and wife, Karen, and Gloria Jordan and husband, Robert, all of Ruidoso; Sherry Rhodes and husband, Jeff, of Alamogordo; Katy Clark and husband, Randy, Chuck Mitchell and wife, Karey, Billy Kimbrough and wife, Rose, and June Kimbrough, all of Albuquerque; and Patricia Umholtz and husband, Tom, of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; devoted friends Denise Mason, of Kansas, Randy and Gwen Burroughs, Lucy Braswell, Sheila Mills, Shelley and Dave Kiersey; and longtime friend Betty Scott.
Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011. at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarity. She will be inurned with her husband at Mountain View Cemetery following the services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Betty Dare Good Samaritan Home, Alamo Senior Center or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
Special thanks go to the Alamo Senior Center staff, Drs. Walcher and Anireddy, especially the staff and volunteers at Good Samaritan Society - Betty Dare for all the love they gave her as well as an extended quality of life, and the many friends who so graciously extended themselves to her and with whom she enjoyed so many fun and humorous moments.
The Mitchell family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Alamogordo Funeral Home. Cremation will take place locally at PCS.
