Francis Parkman Coffin, 91, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at his home in Alamogordo. He was born July 31, 1921, in Schenectady, N.Y., to Francis Parkman Coffin and Miriam Gage Coffin.
As a child, he was educated in New England, attending the Forman School and the Putney School. He went on to receive his master's degree in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and worked for MIT during World War II. He returned to RPI and taught physics there before joining IBM as computer programmer.
As a young adult, he was an avid rock climber and skier and belonged to a flying club. During an IBM ski trip, he met Helen Seislove, who he later wed in 1967. While living in Binghamton, N.Y., Francis and Helen had two children.
In the early 1970s, his work with IBM and Holloman Air Force Base brought him and his family to Alamogordo. Francis and Helen fell in love with the area and decided to retire in Alamogordo and continue raising their children.
For many years, Francis was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and held the office of financial secretary for several years. He belonged to the local Astronomy Club and a local hiking club.
Francis will be deeply missed by his family and those who loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Seislove Coffin, of the family home; his son Charles Parkman Coffin, of Jiangyin, China; his daughter Heidi Sue Coffin, of Stoneham , Mass.; his sister Lucy Allen Jamison and her husband, John Jamison, of Rockport , Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Rosamond Coffin Hopkins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Bob Reno officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
