Frank A. Hegwer, 80

Frank A. Hegwer, 80, of Alamogordo, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2011.
Frank was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Maude Okla., the son of Frank Hegwer and Lizzie Austin Hegwer. He married Patricia Ann Sharman on May 5, 1951.
He retired from the Air Force as a major after an illustrious 20 years of service to his country. During his Air Force career, he served as a meteorologist in Korea, a hurricane hunter in Japan and a solar observer in New Mexico. He was the commanding officer of an Air Force solar observatory in Puerto Rico before retiring in 1970.
After retiring from the Air Force, Frank worked as a solar observer at Climax, Colo., and at Sacramento Peak Observatory in New Mexico. He later became the director of administrative services for the National Solar Observatory and was instrumental in obtaining funding to establish a visitor's center at the Sacramento Peak Observatory.
While employed at Sacramento Peak, Frank and his wife, Pat, established a pecan orchard in Arrey which they owned for 25 years.
He retired from Sacramento Peak Observatory in 1993 and enjoyed playing golf, traveling in his motor home, and his service with the Alamogordo Elks Club and the Alamogordo Masonic Lodge.
Frank is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Pat, and his three sons and their spouses, Bruce and Edie, of Elephant Butte, Ben and Jil, of Craig, Colo., and Stephen and Christina, of Alamogordo; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He is affectionately remembered by all who know him for his intelligence, his work ethic, his leadership abilities, his sense of humor, and his love of his family.
A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Washington Avenue in Alamogordo at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011. The service will be conducted by Pastor Larry Sydow. A reception will be held afterward at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Alamogordo or to the donor's favorite charity.
The Hegwer family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
