Retied Air Force major
Freda M. Herrera, 86, a longtime resident of La Luz, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, in Alamogordo.
Freda was born Dec. 22, 1921, at Camp Stephen D. Little in Nogales, Ariz., to Royal Robert and Rachel (Mix) Herrera. After graduation from University High School in Los Angeles in 1939, she enrolled in Long Beach Junior College.
She transferred to UCLA in 1940 and received an associate of arts degree in 1942. She then enrolled in the University of California School of Nursing and received a bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1944. In 1945 she enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and transferred to the Air Force in 1947.
While in the military, she received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Earlham College in Indiana and a master of science degree in physiology from Ohio State University. Her awards in the Air Force included the Air Force Reserve Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four bronze oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star, and the Meritorious Service Medal. For more than six years, she was plans and programs officer for the Aero Med Lab at Holloman Air Force Base, where they trained chimpanzees and tested human impact resistance for space flight. She retired as a major in 1970 at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, after 25 years of service. She was best known locally as a master weaver, having owned La Casa Cien in La Luz for many years where she taught Southwest-style weaving.
She is survived by close friends Dianne and Ray Vowel, of Ruidoso, Gus Mendoza, of Alamogordo, Chris Trowbridge, of Alamogordo, and Joan Nussbaum, of Cloudcroft.
There will be no local services and interment will be in the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery with military honors by the Air Force.
