Frederick Michael Jarnagin Obituary
Frederick Michael Jarnagin of Alamogordo, New Mexico passed away at the age of 67 on December 12, 2017. Known to his family and friends as Mike, he died of a heart attack doing what he loved most, hiking the trails and canyons near Alamogordo with friends. He was born March 5, 1950 in Dallas, Texas to Emily Nora Owen Jarnagin and Bayless Newt "Freck" Jarnagin, who with his sister Janet Elaine LaCroix, aunts Pat Owen (Carlisle) Ginnings and Juanita Jarnagin (Earl) Cochrane and uncles Fred Owen, Bob Owen, and Thurman (Louise) Jarnagin preceded him in death.

Mike is survived by his daughter, Nicole Jarnagin, son Chris Mashburne, brother-in-law Carroll LaCroix, aunt Mary Owen (Robert) Minnis, uncle Ken (Nancy) Owen, nine cousins, and a host of friends that loved and admired him.

Mike grew up in Denton, Texas where he was active in Boy Scouts, Asbury Methodist Youth Fellowship, and Denton High School. He worked with his father and uncle at Jarnagin's Nursery, and later owned and operated the business. After selling the company, Mike was active in the outdoor recreation industry and in real estate investments in California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Mike settled in Alamogordo where he explored the canyons and led hikers to places they would not explore on their own. As Trail Master, he built, maintained, and prepared trails for easy access. Friends say Mike's leadership in canyoneering, from basic beginner to seasoned rock climber, was his most important contribution to the Alamogordo area. Mike was active in Cuba Church of Christ Food Bank, Roadrunner Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Clothing Mission; and he took food to shut-ins. A friend described Mike in two words, "generous and giving" and his family would agree.

Mike always closed correspondence with one simple word, Smile. . .
