Frieda Reuter

1924 - 2014 Obituary Condolences

Frieda Reuter, beloved friend and family member of Allen and Carol Henry, died peacefully the morning of Sept. 13 in Alamogordo. She was 90.

Frieda came to the US from her homeland of Germany. She arrived in California where she lived with "sponsors" for the required amount of time. She then made her way to Organ where she began her bartending career.
James Sewell, then owner of the Western Bar in Cloudcroft, discovered Frieda in Organ, noting that she had a special "knack" at handling customers and keeping them in control at that business. Mr. Sewell offered Frieda a position at the Western in Cloudcroft, she accepted, and moved to the mountain.
She was particularly remembered for her very large fly swatter, deep German growl and the "look" you got if you were out of line at the Western Bar.
In 1985, Allen and Carol Henry purchased the Western and included Frieda as a part of their family, a friendship that endured through the next three decades. Frieda's favorite place to visit with the Henrys and their children, Jon and Shauna, was Fun Valley, Colo. Many wonderful memories come from time spent at that resort.
Frieda was inducted into the Bar Tender's Hall of Fame. She was overwhelmingly surprised by this honor and proudly wore her Hall-of-Fame ring until the moment of her death.
Frieda became a citizen of the United States. She was so proud of the hard work, studying and honor that was bestowed on her that day. She remained a loyal citizen to our country, and felt that the ability to vote freely was an honor and duty to this country.

The memorial service will be conducted at Western Bar in Cloudcroft Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 at 4 p.m.

The Reuter family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation will take place at PCS.
