Garland C. Stuart Obituary
Garland C Stuart, 96, a resident of Alamogordo, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012. He was born April 14, 1916, on the Jal Ranch in Jal to James Austin Stuart and Mary Ella Hight Stuart.
At age 5, the family moved to Artesia, where he grew up. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1934 and then worked for the local newspaper as a printer.
Garland married his sweetheart and life partner, Oma Charline King, on Oct. 12, 1936. They lived in Artesia until 1958 when they moved to Tularosa, having purchased a weekly newspaper. They ran this enterprise until about 1974, then moved to Alamogordo in 1975.
In Alamogordo, Garland owned and operated The Press, a print shop, until he retired from printing in 1981. Garland only retired from printing; he continued working at their hobby of rock hounding and selling the crafts they produced at various shows throughout New Mexico and Colorado. Even at age 96, Garland continued doing what he loved.
Garland volunteered to serve his country in World War II from Aug. 2, 1944, to Aug. 16, 1946. He was with the 7430 AAA Gun Battalion assigned to the Asiatic Pacific campaign landing in the Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal.
Survivors include daughter Garleen Daniel, of Williamsburg; three grandsons, Wesley E. Daniel, of Midwest City, Okla., Ronald D. Daniel and wife, Gwen, of Dallas, and Stuart C. Daniel, of El Paso; eight great-grandchildren, Mandi, Sasha, Benjamin, Stephanie, Kathie, Matthew, Jacob and Joseph; one step-great-grandson, Steven; four great-great-grandchildren, Camille, Zeke, Noah and Ava Marie; three siblings, Averille O. Stuart Dew, of Arteisa, Drotha M. Stuart Bruno, of Chicago, and Robert H. Stuart, of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Garland was preceded in death by his wife of 65-plus years, Oma Charline Stuart; parents James A. and Mary Ella Stuart; son-in-law Ronald M. Daniel; five brothers, Wilber L. Stuart, Ira J. Stuart, D.C. Stuart, James F. Stuart and John A. Stuart; sister Irene Stuart Small; and step-great-grandson Charlie Wagner.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Grace Baptist Church, 2324 Indian Wells Road, Alamogordo, with Pastor Joe Bryant officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
