Garrett Anderson "Bear" Misener Obituary
Garrett 'Bear' Anderson Misener
USMC Sgt. Garrett "Bear" Anderson Misener, age 25, was killed in action in Afghanistan on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010. He was born in Clovis, Aug. 19, 1985.
Sgt. Misener died serving his country and protecting those who could not protect themselves. "Bear" was known for his love of God, family and friends, and wanted to be a soldier since the age of two and felt he was called by God to be a Marine. His family rejoices in the knowledge that Garrett's name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
He was also an accomplished vocalist and musician. He excelled at drums, double bass, ukulele, guitar, and viola. He was involved in the Memphis Youth Symphony, all-west and all-state Tennessee orchestras, several local bands, the Cordova High School rugby team and Cordova's PACK TV, where he graduated in 2003. He inspired his family and friends to find their calling in life and to do it with all their heart.
Garrett lived by the motto: "Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto the LORD and not unto men."
Garrett is survived by his mother, Jannette and step-father Dan Zaccagnino of Arlington, Tenn.; father, Gary and step-mother Susan Misener of Alamogordo; sisters, Jana and Anne Misener of Memphis, Tenn.; grandparents, Ralph and Peggy Jones, Milford and Coral Misener, Dan and Sally Zaccagnino, and Carl and Merry Del Wade; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and his dog, Duke. A formal military funeral service was held at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn. at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011.
Garrett's body will brought to New Mexico where he will be laid to rest at Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen, on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at 1 p.m. with Marine Corp honors.
A memorial service will take place at Bethel Baptist Church in Alamogordo, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011. The family is requesting that flowers not be sent, but rather, contributions be made in any of the following ways: New Teddy bears be brought to the any of the service locations, which will be donated to Local Children's Hospitals or tax deductible monetary donations may be made to the "Gallaway Mission House" (More information is available on the "Operation Bear Hug" Facebook page) or, for New Mexico family and friends, in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, PO Box 629 Portales, NM. 88130.
