Gary Lynn Jones Obituary
Gary Lynn Jones, 69, of Alamogordo, NM passed away Thursday, January11th, 2018 at W.M. Beaumont Army Medical Center, El Paso, TX.

Gary was born the youngest son of Owen & Dorothy Jones on February 18th, 1948 in Marysville, KS. The Jones family relocated to Sumner, WA where he grew up & developed his love for hot rods.

He was a longtime resident of Alamogordo, having arrived with the U.S. Airforce in the early 70's as an aircraft mechanic. He went on to own Gary's Automotive Machine & Gary Jones Racing Engines. He was a loving husband, father & widely respected, talented & reputable automotive machinist. He gained the nickname 'The Crank', from his extraordinary ability to turn crankshafts into works of art. He was also well known as 'Jonesy' to many of his close friends.

In 1974 he married Shelley Rankin, whom he loved with all his heart. They raced & played for years together before settling down to have a family. In 1985 along came Brian & 1989 came Mark! The best two miracles in their lives. Gary was very proud of his sons, & the men they became.

He raced for many years with his partner & brother in law, Norman Rankin Jr. as the Rankin & Jones Racing Team from 1975 to 1982. The team set two AHRA world records with their '63 split-window Corvette. Gary worked hard alongside all of the other local drag racers for approval to race at Holloman AFB as part of the Phantom Timing Association. Gary continued to build engines for fellow racers & friends for over 40 years while building his remarkable reputation, until a series of illnesses eventually prevented him from continuing with his life's passion. Despite this, he could still be found at the shop reminiscing with his friends of days past & sharing his knowledge with his youngest son, Mark, who followed in Gary's footsteps & continues his legacy as an automotive machinist.

Gary is survived by his loving wife Shelley, Brian Jones & Amy Frazier of Phoenix, AZ, Mark Jones & Maggie Fazenbaker of Alamogordo, brother in law Colin Rankin of Alamogordo, older brother Larry Jones & wife Mary of Puyallup, WA, sister Carol Robin & husband Chris of Sumner, WA, numerous extended family members, & many close friends.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 11th at the Elks Lodge located at 2290 Hamilton Rd in Alamogordo, at 2pm with a potluck & reception to follow. To celebrate Gary's passion, the service will begin with a procession of muscle cars & hot rods. Further details concerning the logistics of the procession are forthcoming.

Gary will be missed by many, but never forgotten.
